A note on boosters

Some vaccinations require boosters to provide maximum immunity, but they vary depending on the vaccine. In the case of chicken pox (varicella), one dose of the vaccine is 85-per-cent effective at preventing any form of varicella, and almost 100-per-cent effective against severe varicella. Studies have found that two doses of the vaccine are 88- to 98-per-cent effective at preventing all varicella.24

What are the risks of vaccinating vs not vaccinating?

If you are weighing up the relative dangers of highly infectious or lethal illnesses and vaccines that carry small risks of side effects, then the least risky option is to vaccinate your children.25 In terms of both serious and mild side effects from vaccines, anti-vaccinators often argue that these are kept hidden from parents, but in fact they are available to read both online and in package inserts for vaccines, just as you can for any medication, which all carry risks of side effects. On the other hand, measles, polio and other such diseases carry high risks of complications and can result in death. Contracting measles once has also been found to predispose children to other infectious diseases for a number of years afterwards.26

Also, allergic reactions are listed as side effects but a child can be allergic to any ingredient – for example, soy, nuts, eggs – that has been used in the vaccine, so this is not to do with supposed ‘hidden chemicals’ in vaccines but to do with allergic history that runs in families. It does not apply to all children, but to specific risk groups, which scientists are getting better at identifying. Children who are identified as allergic beforehand are told not to get specific vaccinations.

Statistics show that you are more likely to die or become injured in a car crash than from a vaccine – any vaccine. In the list of the 25 most likely causes of death the top four are heart disease, cancer, stroke and land vehicle accidents, but are you going to stop driving? Is it worth the risk? If only the anti-vaccinators put their energy into building safer roads, the world would be a safer place for our children than it currently is.
